Meet the Maker - Four Points Trading Co.

When I was 19 I spun out in my 1981 Chevy Camaro Berlinetta (yeah, yeah). It was summer in Connecticut, midday. We had just had a thundershower and the sun broke through as often happens in New England summer. It was hot and humid and the pavement was slick with the oil that came up during the storm. I took a corner the tiniest bit too enthusiastically and spun - no injuries, no real damage but holy moly - it was terrifying. On the rare occasion that I smell that smell here in sunny southern California - hot, rain-soaked pavement - I am right back to that moment in time. My heart rate goes up, my palms get clammy, that smell is a crazy powerful trigger. Just ask the folks at Four Points Trading Co., they've built a business on olfactory memories.

Annie and Scott Signore started making uniquely scented candles as a clever way to share their childhood memories with their daughter Brooklyn. Now, lucky for us, they share them with everyone. And you have never met two entrepreneurs that love their work more than these two. We met Scott and Annie at the Rosebowl Flea Market way back when and run into them often at Maker shows. The experience is always delightfully the same. People are picking up candles with curious looks - Dirt? Red Hots? Whiskey? Saw Dust?? Scott is strolling the booth, answering questions. Annie is giggling to the point of teary eyes as people FREAK at these fragrances. "Try the Fruit Loops!" she says, "Have you tried BBQ?" Strangers are handing candles back and forth - buttered popcorn ... candy apple ... pulling each other into the experience. It's hilarious and magical. Everyone has a memory that's stirred by roses or whiskey or birthday cake. Wisteria is the house we lived in when my boys were tiny. Cherry Tobacco is my Grampa. Fresh baked bread is my own kitchen in the fall.

Think about it for a second. What aromas take you back? I mean truly set you in a previous place and time? It's powerful stuff right? Four Points Trading Co. brings you back to that moment - no carbs, no hangovers, no seasonal allergies.

April subscribers received Four Points Trading Co.'s 4oz. Soy Candle in Magnolia - the perfect fragrance to welcome spring (MSRP: $11.95).
